Keeping Your Public School Classroom Allergen Free
As a teacher, you want to do all that you can to create a safe education experience for the students in your public school classroom. When you have students in your classroom with food allergies, it can be tough to know exactly what to do in order to keep them safe. Let's take a look at some of the key steps that educators can take to ensure a safe learning experience for students with food allergies.
First, talk with the student and their parents about their allergies. Be sure you understand the full scope of their allergies. If the student struggles to communicate when they're having an allergic reaction, develop a system or signal that the student can use to get your attention. Be sure of the steps that you need to take in order to help the student if they have a reaction.
Also, you'll want to communicate the food allergy to other parents in the classroom. Be sure that students are not bringing the allergen into the classroom in their lunch, or for class snacks. You'll also want to talk to the student's parents about any common products that may contain their allergen (such as soy in lotion, for example), and whether these products are safe for the student.
